Nicholas Bourke was an Anglo-Irish lawyer who had migrated to Jamaica around 1740. He quickly became one of the most prominent plantation owners and political leaders on the island, contending both for the obligation of the Crown to defend the colony, but also for the exclusive right of the colonists to tax themselves.
