William Murray, First Earl of Mansfield was a prominent politician and lawyer of the eighteenth century. He was born in Scotland to an aristocratic family whose loyalty to the Stuart kings had greatly reduced the family’s fortune. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, took his first position reading law with the prominent barrister and fellow Scotsman, William Hamilton, and eventually rose to become Chief Justice in 1758.
