Bacon began as a shopkeeper in Maryland but quickly diversified into various mercantile trades, including the slave trade. Returning to London around 1758, he obtained important supply contracts for the imperial navy for both the West Indies and West Africa. He accepted the ultimate authority of Parliament over the colonies but often disputed the forms adopted for taxation and regulation. He supported the North administration, and represented Aylesbury in Parliament from 1764 to 1784.
