In 1776, Hartley became the first MP to argue for abolition of the slave trade in the House of Commons, resolving that “the slave trade is contrary to the laws of God and the rights of men.” Despite his opposition to the American side in the Revolution, Hartley was a good friend of Benjamin Franklin, and joined him in writing and signing the treaty that ended the Revolutionary war.
