Anonymous (Sincerus)

“Sincererus” was one of a number of anonymous writers attempting to respond to Samuel Johnson’s essay “Taxation no Tyranny,” published early in the year 1775. In both name and style, Sincerus sought to counter Johnson’s erudite sarcasm with a blunt and direct address to the king, instructing him without all the usual airs of either subjection or aristocracy. He also feigned no concern with popular opinion but insisted that truth required frankness and brevity in its articulation.
