Stebbing was a clergyman who served as preacher to Gray’s Inn. His father was an arch conformist who was constantly at battle with heresy; the son chose a quieter path, earning a reputation for being mild-mannered and amiable. Curiously, this otherwise very peaceful disposition completely abandoned him regarding the colonies. As Chaplain in Ordinary to King George III, he was unreservedly anti-American.
