Born into a prominent Maryland political family, Edmund’s father had been the King’s Attorney of the colony and his grandfather, governor. Of considerable means, the family sent young Edmund to study at Eton Cambridge and Middle Temple. He never returned to America but continued correspondence with prominent colonial leaders such as Arthur Lee and John Adams, both of whom thought very highly of his abilities and relied on his advice on European affairs.
