Stanley was the younger son of James Smith-Stanley, Lord Strange. He entered into military service after attending Eton and Cambridge. While critical of administration policy, he supported Parliamentary supremacy, going in 1775 to America as a major in the dragoons. Returning in 1776, he served as an MP until traveling again with his regiment to Jamaica, where he died late in 1779.
