William Knox was born in Ireland in 1732 but had firsthand experience in America as provost marshal of the young colony of Georgia from 1756 to 1762. Subsequently he would return to London to serve as an agent for the colony but also as one of the chief penmen defending the policies of the Grenville administration. He would later become one of two undersecretaries of state for the colonies, a close associate of Lord George Germain, and one of the most insightful commentators on America.
