Little is known of Joseph Cawthorne except that his sympathies for the American argument concerning the necessity of representation for the authority to tax and Parliament’s right to rule over the empire. This has frequently resulted in his being associated with both pro-colonial and pro-imperial positions. He wrote during the most intense years of the controversy between 1774 and 1782.
