Ogden was born in Manchester and worked for a time in textile manufacturing as a fustian cutter. As a young man he travelled about Europe and lived for a year at the Hague, and was a witness of the battle of Dettingen (1743). He also served for a short time as a school master for the Manchester Collegiate Church. He became known for extended verses of local interest and descriptions of his native town.
