A member of Parliament, first for Wigan and later for Liverpool, during the years of the American crisis, Sir William Meredith was considered a Rockingham Whig. He was critical of William Pitt on the question of Canada. Perpetually in debt, he eventually had to part with the estate that he had inherited from his father.
