Son of a successful silk merchant, Ibbetson was able to focus attention on his studies at an early age. He entered Exeter College, Oxford at 16 and was quickly drawn to the study of theology. His accomplishments were such that he rose steadily in the Church of England thereafter to become Archdeacon of St. Albans in 1757 until his passing.
