Searl began his career in the royal navy where his competence eventually recommended him to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Dartmouth, who employed Searl as Undersecretary in 1772. His skill as a writer of prose obtained him the appointment as editor of the New York Gazette during the British occupation. He returned to England in 1780 to administer prisoners during the conflict with revolutionary France.
