Estranged from his father for gambling, drinking, promiscuity and bad temperament, the 2nd Baron Lyttelton was often referred to as “naughty Tom.” Despite his reputation, he sat in Parliament for a short time and was a fierce opponent of the American cause. As a youth, he was a friend to the young George III. He appears to have been about to change his mind, however, on the military campaign in America when he suddenly died.
