Born to a family of ministers and theologians, it is not surprising that Bentham entered the Anglican church where he advanced in the ranks to eventually become Regius Professor of divinity at Oxford College. He was critical of certain members of Parliament, such as Edmund Burke, for encouraging the spirit of rebellion in the colonies. He was a distant cousin of the philosopher of utilitarianism, Jeremey Bentham.
