James Burgh was born in Scotland and after failing in a number of undertakings including the printing and linen trades became involved in education, first as an assistant teacher and finally as the principal of his own academy. As a member of the political club, the Honest Whigs, whose members included Richard Price and Benjamin Franklin, he favored the cause of the American colonies in opposition to taxation without representation.
