Hope was of a prominent merchant family originally of Dutch origin. His cousin, the 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, supported his standing for Parliament from Linlithgowshire in 1768 but withdrew his favor in 1770 when Hope allied himself with the radical, John Wilkes. Hope then returned to the merchant trade and his pen to compose prose, poetry and political essays.
