Little is known of James Stewart but that he was a member of the wider Scottish family variously spelled Stewart, Stuart or Steuart. He should not be confused with Sir James Steuart who was known for his 1767 systematic treatise on political economy. This Stewart was a critic of Richard Price and a defender, like his more famous namesake, of the acts of navigation and Parliamentary supremacy.
