Born on Long Island, Sayre was a supporter of colonial rights. He moved to London in the 1760s becoming a supporter of John Wilkes. He was a merchant with business ties to the Caribbean and eventually became High Sheriff of the City in 1774. He was arrested on suspicion of plotting to kidnap George III, but was acquitted by Lord Mansfield, returning to America in 1783.
