Lofft’s long career was marked by a sense of justice that often ran counter to popular opinion. He was struck from the Roll of qualified lawyers over his support and sympathy for a young servant who was hanged for stealing 40 shillings. Loft accompanied her to the gallows and shielded her from the rain as she approached. In later years, he wrote vigorously against Napoleon’s imprisonment on Elba.
