Smethurst is best known for his escape from captivity by native tribes in the Chaleur Bay area between Quebec and New Brunswick. Born in Marblehead Massachusetts he eventually moved to Nova Scotia where he became a legislator interested in negotiating a reconciliation between Britain and her colonies to the south. He later removed to London where he died in 1826.
