Canning was the disinherited son of a well placed Anglo-Irish family in Londonderry. Disowned for his marriage of love to a penniless bride, Canning moved to London where he became a barrister of limited means. He was a strong supporter of the radical John Wilkes. His son would become a leading Tory MP and Prime Minister.
