Hanway’s work as a merchant took him to Russia, Persia, Germany, and the Netherlands. Once back in London he founded the Marine Society, became Governor of the Foundling Hospital, and worked to establish Magdalen Hospital. He was a noted opponent of tea drinking, and the first man in England to carry an umbrella.
