Mason was a royal chaplain from 1757 to 1772 and Precentor of York Minster from 1762. He published a book on the poems of Thomas Gray and is perhaps best known for his work, The English Garden. He also composed music. During the American Revolution he was sympathetic to the colonies and turned his talents to criticizing ministerial policies. These pieces, written anonymously, were among his papers and published in a later collection of his works.
