Lieutenant General William Draper was a military hero of the Seven Years War in which he was recognized for the command of the 79th Regiment of Foot, which achieved victory over the French at the Battle of Madras. He hoped for a peaceful resolution of the disputes with the Americans. He did not doubt Parliament’s right to tax them, but questioned doing so on prudential grounds.
