Raised in the agricultural setting of Midlothian in the lowlands of Scotland, Anderson was drawn to the application of science to farming. From there, he was attracted to law and political economy. On the subject of diminishing marginal returns in agriculture, he argued that innovation could overcome such limitations. He was favorable to the navigation acts and supported the vigorous enforcement of Parliamentary authority over the colonies.
