Olivers began as a Welsh shoemaker but turned Methodist preacher on hearing George Whitfield preach. It was John Wesley, however, who made Olivers a close ally. Musically gifted, Olivers composed and wrote “The God of Abraham Praise.” Firmly Tory, he opposed American independence. Wesley dismissed Olivers as a co-writer of the Arminian Magazine for typographical errors, but continued to treat him as a son. Olivers was interred in the Wesley tomb.
