Also known as John Scott of Amwell, Scott was largely self-educated and eventually became a prominent Quaker minister in the Hertfordshire village of Amwell. He had a strong interest in poetry and through a common friend was introduced to Samuel Johnson who thought highly of his abilities, though he disagreed with his politics. Scott looked favorably on the American cause.
