Evans was the son of a prominent dissenting minister who followed in his father’s career path, starting as the assistant pastor in his church. He also worked as a teacher in the dissenting academy of Broadmead and was a founder of the Bristol Education Society. When John Wesley turned against the American cause, Evans challenged his “Calm Address,” and defended colonial claims to the equal rights of Englishmen.
