Sir John Dalrymple was a member of the famous Scottish Dalrymple family, the fourth baronet was a friend to both David Hume and Samuel Johnson. Like Johnson he was a critic of the American cause and his writing was among the many works sponsored by the government to sway American opinion away from the revolutionary cause. In this he was opposed by his cousin, also named John Dalrymple, but who held the estate of Stair as the 5th Earl.
