Sharp began in the linen trade but scholarly inclination motivated him to learn Hebrew and Greek. His abilities prompted his employer to seek assistance to prove a baronial claim. Sharp was then enabled to pursue the position of ordinance clerk in the Tower of London, giving him greater freedom to write on topics of Parliamentary representation and antislavery reform. His work was foundational to the Somersett case of 1772.
