A Country Gentleman
–
“A Gentleman” or “A Country Gentleman” were common appellations for writers spanning from the 17th to the 19th centuries wishing to associate themselves with the classical virtues of disinterested statesmanship. It implied a life of independence from the politics of patronage associated with the king’s court or ministers in the great capital cities and a life lived through independent means, reminiscent of Cato the Elder or Cicero.
