John Dalrymple Stair, eldest son of the fifth son of the first earl of Stair, passed admission as advocate of the Scottish bar in 1741, but shortly afterwards entered the army attaining the rank of captain. He briefly entered the House of Lords upon the death of his cousin as Fifth Earl of Stair. Against advice of other lords, he presented a petition from Massachusetts in 1774, for which he obtained the colony’s thanks.
