Little is known of Wheelock’s personal circumstances, though he claimed to have lived in America, held the rank of captain, and otherwise resided “generally in the country,” an assertion frequently used by those wishing to imply personal objectivity and rustic virtue. Benjamin Franklin thought well enough of his arguments to merit marginalia in his copy of Reflections Moral and Political.
