As a dissenter, Cappe was close to Dr. Joseph Priestley, and while many of Priestley’s coreligionists supported the American cause, Priestley famously sided with Samuel Johnson. In the attacks on Priestley, Cappe was notable for coming to his defense. Not a prolific writer, he was considered an able one. His sermons were mostly published posthumously, by his wife, Catherine Cappe.
