Shebbeare was born to an attorney and corn trader of middling rank in Devonshire and was apprenticed to a surgeon, entering the medical profession as his first occupation. His capacity for writing, however, drew him into London’s literary circles where he came into the employ of the Grenville Administration. He was considered a minor rival of Samuel Johnson, who shared similar political proclivities.
