General John Burgoyne, nicknamed “Gentleman Johnny”, was a British Army officer whose surrender at Saratoga marked a major turning point in the Revolution. He was a Whig in the sense of his support of Parliament, but he was not sympathetic to the American cause. Often classed as over confident and only marginally competent as a general, he was nonetheless considered brave and was well liked by his troops.
