John Day was born in England to a well-known physician and moved early in life with his father to Nova Scotia. He became a merchant and military provisioner to royal forces and a member of the Nova Scotia assembly. Despite his military contracts, he was sympathetic to colonial claims, arguing that American settlers constituted independent and disinterested yeomen. He was killed by a lightning strike at sea in late 1775.
