He authored The Fragile Fabric of Union: Cotton, Federal Politics, and the Global Origins of the Civil War (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009), winner of the Bennett H. Wall book award in southern economic history; and co-edited The Old South’s Modern Worlds: Slavery, Region, and Nation in the Age of Progress (Oxford, 2011) and Between Sovereignty and Anarchy: The Politics of Violence in the American Revolutionary Era (Virginia, 2015). His current project views secession and the Union response as part of a broader global crisis in sovereignty.
