Jane E. Calvert earned her BA in German and English at Earlham College and her PhD from the University of Chicago. She is founder, director, and chief editor of the John Dickinson Writings Project (JDP) and associate professor of History at the University of Kentucky (UK).

To write her first book, Quaker Constitutionalism and the Political Thought of John Dickinson (Cambridge 2009), the first comprehensive analysis of the thought and actions of John Dickinson, she received awards from the American Philosophical Society, the Newberry Library, the Huntington Library, and others. With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Historic Publications and Records Commission, and numerous scholarly institutions and private foundations, the JDP has thus far produced two volumes of the Complete Writings and Selected Correspondence of John Dickinson (University of Delaware Press, 2020 – .), which received an award for “Best Historical Materials” from the American Library Association. With the support of an NEH Public Scholars grant and the State of Delaware, she is currently finishing the first complete and accurate biography of Dickinson, to be published by Oxford University Press. Other work includes Selected Writings of Thomas Paine, and numerous articles in scholarly journals.
