Otto von Gierke (1841-1921) was a German jurist and legal historian who taught for many years at the University of Berlin. He exerted a significant influence on the English legal historian F. W. Maitland whose translation introduced Gierke’s work to the English speaking world. His major works are Das deutsche Genossenschaftsrecht (Berlin 1868-1881), Naturrrecht und Deutsches Recht (Frankfurt 1883), and Deutsches Privatrecht (Leipzig 1895).
