Whately was a prodigious writer who was active in political, economic, and ecclesiastical reforms, especially the education of children and poverty in Ireland. His broad interests ranged beyond religion and economics into logic, politics, social rights, and literary reviews. He was succeeded at Oxford by J. E. Cairnes.
