He is the author of Theory for the Working Sociologist (2017, Columbia University Press), From Black Power to Black Studies: How a Radical Social Movement Became an Academic Discipline (2007, The Johns Hopkins University Press) and co-author, with Michael T. Heaney of Party in the Street: The Antiwar Movement and the Democratic Party after 9/11 (2015, Cambridge University Press). He was a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar in Health Policy Research and received the 2016 Leon D. Epstein Award from the American Political Science Association for an outstanding book in the study of political organizations and parties.
