Michael Polanyi was born in Budapest in 1891. His university studies initially centered on medicine, but he then turned to chemistry,. Polanyi had been interested in the political life if Europe from a young age, and his interest increased in the inter-war years. A participant in the famous Walter Lippman colloquium, as well as a founding member of the Mont Pelerin Society.
