Considerations on Certain Political Transactions of the Province of South Carolina: Containing a View of the Colony Legislatures (under the Description of That of Carolina in Particular). With Observations, Shewing Their Resemblance to the British...
- Egerton Leigh (author)
- Jack P. Greene (collection editor)
This pamphlet examines the colonial legislature of South Carolina and draws comparisons to the British parliamentary model. The work arose from a specific political controversy: after the King’s Council refused to pass currency bills proposed by William Henry Drayton, and Drayton published his protest in the official Gazette, the printer Thomas Powell was arrested on Leigh’s orders — an act that sparked the broader dispute the pamphlet addresses. A rebuttal, Answer to Considerations on Certain Political Transactions of the Province of South Carolina, was subsequently published and is believed to have been authored by Drayton himself.
