Bio

William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, aka, Pitt the Elder, dominated British policy during the Seven Years War. An expansionist, he still accepted much regional self-rule, characteristic of an earlier politics. He was also known for taking critical positions against the policies of Walpole early in his career, and for his support of repeal of Grenville’s Stamp tax. As Prime Minister (1766 to 1768), though, he was distracted, allowing passage of the Townshend duties without his review.
