Samuel Estwick (?1736-1795) was closely connected to Barbados and referred to himself as assistant agent for that colony. In earlier works he blamed imperial policy for slavery, disputed the characterization of colonials as barbarians, and, in 1776, contended for leaving them to their own self-government, sharing with the North Americans the view that Parliament had no right to impose internal taxes, but nevertheless supporting imperial regulation and protection.
