Bio

Of Scottish origin, James McPherson claimed to have discovered the poems of Ossian in 1761, an ancient Gaelic bard. These were popular in both Britain and America, but their authenticity was quickly challenged. In 1764, he served as secretary to the colonial governor of Florida and later became a member of parliament. The poems helped inspire the Romantic movement.
