Bio

Bernard was an administrator and governor, serving terms in both New Jersey (1758-60) and Massachusetts (1760-69). He was considered a harsh executive because of his efforts to enforce Parliamentary taxes. During the crisis over the Townshend Duties, he invited Royal Troops to be stationed in Boston. He was recalled to England 1769 where he continued to advocate a hard line against colonial protests.
